DIGITAL ART
CONSIDERED.

I think there are two polar opposites where things stand with digital art today. Some will like/love it, some will reject it immediately. Not many people seem to be in the middle and that is likely to continue for a while. For those of us who are making digital art we need to be patient. We also need to let this new art form expand and mature.

Digital art is new for many viewers and some will quickly dismiss it as "computer (machine) made" without involvement of the hand. Now really, if I don't use my hands my computer just sits there doing nothing. With computers hands are totally involved, I can't just think it onto the screen. Would you say of a pencil drawing that it was done with a pencil so the hands are not involved? The pencil is the tool to make the work. The computer and software are also the tools to make the work. With either pencil drawing or the computer the creative ideas still start in the head of the artist and they use the tools in front of them to create the images. To use the old popular saying, "different strokes for different folks".

Some might say that digital art images lack the personal feel of pen or pencil on paper or paint on canvas. I think that is because we are so familiar with what marks on paper or canvas made by the hand look like that we get a sense immediately of the person who made them. But computer marks look more generic, machine made, hence less personal to most viewers. It is only when one gets involved with the content of the image that one begins to see the individuality of the creator and how personally expressive it can be. But it is like a language, it has to be learned.

I create what I call as "digital paintings" because I use a tablet and stylus to draw on the screen. I delight in creating abstracts but I use Photoshop to discover and explore new textures and shapes, and create looks that are unlikely to appear if I were painting in acrylics or oils. Is this better or worse than traditional painting? Just different. Apples and oranges. But so far I find viewers more open to these because they look related to what we already know of abstract painting (thanks Picasso, Hans Hoffman, Jackson Pollack, etc., etc., etc.)

Some people argue that digital artwork faces an uphill battle to be recognized as an important art form and has a lot of maturing to do, and I would agree. Galleries and museums seem to be a bit slow to embrace it as a legitimate art form, as well as buyers. But there still exists an "avant garde" of artists pushing the envelope and we are now entering a new age of high technology where the steps forward in the art world will more and more involve a lot of computer generated or high tech imagery. After all just look at the success of David Hockney with his iPhone and iPad show in Paris.

What are "Giclee" Prints?

A "Giclee" print is considered to be a HIGH QUALITY ART PRINT. It is a top quality print made on a professional ink jet printer that many regard as the best form for printing artworks today.

Four things define a "Giclee" print.
1. Printing on the highest quality archival media, papers, canvas or other materials available today that are designed to produce extraordinary color, detail, and longevity.
2. Archival pigment based inks are used with high quality media to produce prints that will have an expected display life of at least 50-100 years.
3. Printing is done by a highly skilled "master Printer" professional who has many years of experience and a reputation for making high quality fine art digital "Giclee" prints.
4. Printing is done on a top quality and usually wide format professional level high end printer that prints with 9 to 12 colors producing a wider gamut of colors in the prints produced.

How to choose Artwork

So you have decided to purchase some art for your home. The next step, choosing the art, can be both challenging and fun. One way to start is to look around your nearby local neighborhood and see if there are art galleries or museums you can visit. Do certain artists who you see on exhibit capture your imagination? Does their work excite you?

Another place to visit are local art fairs. Often good artists display and sell their works there and not only can you find affordable art works there you can meet and talk personally with the artists. Many buyers say that this makes the difference for them as to whether they buy art or not as they can get a true sense of the artist and their works through this personal encounter.

Sometimes talented younger artists display their works in local venues such as small local galleries, coffee bars, restaurants, libraries, bank lobbies, etc. Look in these places for some exciting works by interesting and creative artists.

Finally if you are ready to make a purchase it is helpful to have a good idea where the work will be placed. Then when you install it you will be able to see if it pleases you as much as you have hoped.

But what if it doesn't? If for some reason you are not satisfied most artists will usually accept return of the work. Hence your risk is virtually nonexistent.

There are many reasons for having art in your home. First. art brings an energy into your home. It adds a richness to your environment and provides visual food for your eyes. It expands and stimulates your visual senses. Moreover it can delight and impress others who visit. such as your friends and relatives. Finally and perhaps most important it brings you pleasure. It just simply makes you feel good when you encounter it.

Artwork like anything else varies in prices, and sometimes very dramatically. In large cities like New York, San Francisco, Chicago, etc., you can expect to pay higher price because the galleries there usually show works of more well established artists and just because it costs more to run a gallery there. Prices in smaller cities are often less because the artists who show there may be less well known and the operating costs are less. But don't be fooled. Many times some of the most interesting and creative works are found outside big cities and can be purchased much more reasonably.

Many artists these days have internet web sites displaying their works and offering them for sale. And many people are discovering these and considering online purchases of art.

However some buyers may still be reluctant to buy art they cannot see first hand or without actually meeting the artist. But the fact is that almost all artists are trustworthy and most will accept return of a work and refund of payment if the buyer is not satisfied, whether in person or online.
