Museums and Galleries in Philadelphia - Overview |
|
Founded in 1682 by the English Quaker, William Penn, Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the United States and the birthplace of the American nation. Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are permanent reminders of the pivotal role it played in the evolution of the country.
The two square miles of 'Center City', as it is known, remain true to Penn's original concept and Independence National Historical Park preserves the nation's colonial and Revolutionary heritage on its 42-acre site. There are more historical buildings and landmarks here than anywhere else in the country. A wealth of museums and galleries await discovery. These include the Franklin Institute Science Museum, which pays tribute to the achievements of Benjamin Franklin, a former inhabitant, the Rodin Museum, housing the largest collection of the sculptor's works outside of Paris, and numerous significant exhibitions of artistic works and national treasures.
