Welcome
George Scatchard Master Potter
unique hand made pottery from Vermont
This website is intended to be informational for
my customers and other potters. I want to answer
the questions people may have about my pottery
and how I make it. There is nothing for sale here,
just information about the thinking behind my
pottery and how I make it. For sales, you can go

I have been making pottery since I was a child.
Now I am an old potter who's professional career
began in Vermont in 1960. Over the years since,
I have supplied shops in New York and Boston
with planters, garden lights and fountains, set up
and run the University of Vermont's ceramics
program, moved to California to make and sell
pottery, came back to Vermont and set up my
present pottery. In the late 1970's I started a
ceramic lamp business which I recently sold to
another lamp company. Now I have returned to
my roots and am a studio potter throwing pots on
a wheel and firing them in my large home made
car kiln.
In many ways I am a throwback to an earlier
time. I mix my clay by hand with a hand held
mortar mixer. I blend natural clays and minerals
and use no other additives. My glazes are made
from recipes I have developed or modified myself
over the years. My large kiln is now reduction
fired with kerosene to cone 10 and over.
