About Abdominal Lipo

Abdominal liposuction surgery is one of the most widespread procedures
performed not only in the United States but all over the world as well.
According to the statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS),
more than 240,000 lipo procedures have been performed in 2017 in the USA alone, up by 5% from 2016.

What is abdominal lipo?

A procedure that removes stubborn fat pockets in your abdomen. If done right, this surgery can improve your shape and abdominal contours.

But even though abdominal lipo eliminates fat, it shouldn’t be treated as a weight loss procedure. Its main goal is to remove fats that don’t respond to traditional weight loss methods like diet and exercise. Though you’ll lose a bit of weight with liposuction, it’s usually not significant.

Take note also that abdominal liposuction will neither fix abdominal wall weakness nor tighten loose skin. In these cases, you need to combine it with a tummy tuck to achieve your desired results.

How is liposuction of the abdomen performed?

There are several types of liposuction done on the abdomen, but the most common technique used is tumescent liposuction.

In this method, large amounts of buffered salt water are injected into the fatty tissues beneath the skin. Your plastic surgeon then creates a small incision on the fatty area to be treated.

He inserts a thin, hollow tube known as a cannula into the incision and moves it back and forth in rapid motion to loosen the fat. The cannula is attached to a vacuum that sucks out all the loose fat, improving your contours in an instant. The whole procedure may take two to three hours depending on the extent of fat removal.

What are the results of abdominal lipo?

Initially, swelling and bruising will obscure the results of your plastic surgery. You’ll also notice that your tummy skin appears a bit loose, as your body takes some time to adjust to its new shape.

Once the swelling has died down and your skin has tightened, you’ll notice an improvement in your abdominal contours. Your final results—a trimmer figure—will be visible in about six months.

Although removed fat cells in your belly are unlikely to grow back, recent studies show that fat can return as the body tries to compensate for the rapid fat loss by putting on more fat. If you want to maintain your lipo results for years, it’s important that you maintain a healthy lifestyle composed of proper diet and regular exercise.

How much does liposuction of the abdomen cost?

According to the ASPS, liposuction had an average cost of $3,374 in 2017, but the range varies widely. The cost of your abdominal liposuction depends on several factors, like anesthesia, facilities, medical tests, medications, location, and the expertise of your plastic surgeon.

Insurance companies rarely cover lipo of the abdomen, but many plastic surgeons offer financing options to make the cost easier on your pocket.

How can you recover from abdominal lipo?

PAIN & SORENESS>

After tummy liposuction, it’s normal to feel a moderate degree of pain and soreness on the operative site. Compared to other plastic surgeries, the pain you feel in lipo isn’t that severe because it only involves small incisions. It’s similar to the soreness you feel in your muscles after exercising too much.

MEDICATION

Your plastic surgeon will prescribe you with mild pain meds like acetaminophen, which you can take whenever your operative site feels painful or uncomfortable. You should also expect swelling especially during the first 24 hours after your tumescent liposuction, but it will subside over time. It may last up to three months.

COMPRESSION GARMENT

Your plastic surgeon will advise you to wear a compression garment to help curb swelling, so expect small leaks from your incisions as you apply pressure on them. You might be asked to wear your garment for four to eight weeks or until your plastic surgeon says so.

ACTIVITIES

There isn’t a lot of restrictions after liposuction of the abdomen. You can start walking around your home a few hours after your surgery to enhance blood circulation and prevent clots from forming. You can also resume showering the morning after your lipo. You can usually return to work within a couple of days if your job isn’t too taxing. However, you need to refrain from doing your normal workouts until two to three weeks after surgery.
